In January 2011, Pensacola Opera will present an operatic version of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women, as part of its mainstage season at the Saenger Theatre. This special opportunity to present an operatic work based on classic American literature will be enhanced through a community-wide reading project of the novel. Beginning in the fall of 2010, official participants will receive a copy of the novel (or appropriate adaptation) to read. Participants will then have the opportunity to learn about the transition from book to opera through special activities and programs. They will explore the lives of the March sisters and how their story develops from the book to the stage, learning about the basics of opera production and the art forms that make it up. Participants will even meet professional opera singers and other theatre professionals throughout the process. All participants will then enjoy a special performance of the opera at the Saenger Theatre! All participating groups are strongly encouraged to utilize pre-performance learning tools, including activities and resources in the Little Women Teacher Packet (coming soon). Other activities will include a Class/Organizational Visit from an Opera Teaching Artist, Barnes & Noble Book Party, and Essay Contest. Cost for participation is $5 per person.* Each participant will receive a copy of the novel (original or adapted) and free admission to the final dress rehearsal at the Saenger Theatre on January 19, 2011. All official participants will also receive a 20% discount on tickets for final performances on January 21 & 23, 2011. Space is limited, so register your group today!
