Though not successful as an operatic composer, Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s contribution to vocal music is inestimable. With over 600 solo songs, it would be not unreasonable to conclude that every classically trained singer in the world has at some time during their life studied the music of Franz Schubert.

This special Schubertiade includes music from the beginning and end of Schubert’s all too brief compositional life. Soprano Sheila Dunn and clarinetist Richard Jernigan join Artistic Director Jerome Shannon for a performance of the soulful Shepherd on the Rock, composed during the last year of Schubert’s life, before his tragic death at 31. The ebullient (and popular) Piano Quintet in A major, “The Trout”, was composed when Schubert was a mere lad of 21. Violinist Grace Kim, violist Brian Brown, cellist Alexandra Pereverzeva, and bassist Max Levesque join Jerome Shannon for a performance of this iconic piece of chamber music.
