A World Premiere Re-Telling of Bizet's Masterpiece

You may think you know Carmen... think again.
Pensacola Opera presents the world premiere of Carmen: The Traveler, a newly adapted, abridged, and re-orchestrated version of Bizet’s monumental masterpiece. This new imagining of one of opera’s most well known characters features orchestrations by Joseph Brent (Broadway’s Oklahoma!, 2019) and stars mezzo-soprano Caitlin McKechney in the title role.
Carmen: The Traveler transports the action from its original 19th century setting to the pre-war tension of 1930s Seville. A versatile cast of singer-instrumentalists will perform their roles while accompanying themselves on instruments including guitars, mandolins, and accordions. This new format will make the experience even more immersive and captivating.

Show-Only Tickets: $35
A Show Only Ticket includes only access to Phineas Phoggs, it does not include the wine tasting or tapas. Seating is first come, first served, but not guaranteed. ID’s will be checked at door and there will be a cash bar inside Phineas Phoggs.

Caitlin McKechney
as Carmen“Powerhouse mezzo” Caitlin McKechney has made a name for herself as a dynamic singing actress whose performance career has spanned from lead roles with Florida Grand Opera to features as an actor musician in the musical theater realm. Favorite performance credits include Inez Serrano in Andy Vores’s No Exit (Florida Grand Opera, Chicago Opera Vanguard), Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (Florida Grand Opera) Ruth in Pirates of Penzance (Opera North), Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me Kate (Broadway Theater of Pitman, North Street Playhouse), Maddalena in Rigoletto (Opera Memphis, Opera Connecticut), Dinah inTrouble in Tahiti (Magic City Opera and Miami Orchestra) and Woman 4 in Kirsten Volness, Susan Werbe and Kate Holland’s Letters That You Will Not Get with The American Opera Project, for which she is also an Associate Producer. Caitlin formed the Opera Cowgirls, an alt-country band featuring incredible opera singers accompanying themselves on unexpected instruments, creating a show that can be described as where Grand Opera meets the Grand Ol’ Opry. She has performed the role of Carmen with Opera Memphis, Tacoma Opera, Painted Sky Opera and with the Opera Cowgirls in a mashup of some of the opera’s most famous arias and Dolly Parton’s hit, Jolene.
Corey Crider
as EscamilloBaritone Corey Crider is an alumnus of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center and recently returned to the company as Malatesta in Don Pasquale. Additional recent highlights include Marcello in La bohème with the Munich Philharmonic and Arizona Opera, Sharpless in Madame Butterfly with Dayton Opera, and Escamillo in Carmen with Lyric Opera of Kansas City. In the 2016-2017 season, Corey added two important roles to his repertoire: Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff (Opera on the James) and the title role in Rigoletto (Mississippi Opera). Additionally, he sang Scarpia in Tosca with Intermountain Opera and Finger Lakes Opera, returned to Opera Roanoke to perform his acclaimed Emile DeBeque in South Pacific, and joined the Opera Company of Middlebury as Michele/Marco in Il tabarro/Gianni Schicchi. The 2017-2018 season includes Escamillo in Carmen with Madison Opera, Germont in La Traviata with Opera at DuPage, a return to Opera Roanoke as Marcello in La bohème, and an appearance with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra for Belshazzar’s Feast. Upcoming seasons include appearances with The Dallas Opera, Pensacola Opera, and Opera on the James.
Chad Kranak*
as Don JoseChad Kranak has an active operatic career in the U.S. and abroad and has been praised for his “lyrical eloquence” and “attractive lyric sound” by Opera News. His recent credits include Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Scalia (Scalia/Ginsberg), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), and Don José (Carmen). Recent concert and oratorio credits include the Rachmaninoff Vespers, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart Requiem, and Saint-Saëns’ Requiem. He has performed with St. Petersburg Opera, Barn Opera, New Rochelle Opera, DCINY, MidAmerica Productions, St Thomas Church, Voices of Ascension, Bard Music Festival, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and the Sequoia Symphony. Chad’s most recent engagements include Cavaradossi in Heartbeat Opera’s Tosca, Carmen with On Site Opera and Lighthouse Opera, Scalia in Scalia/Ginsberg with Opera Ithaca, a concert of Broadway and Opera hits in North Carolina, plus Mozart’s Requiem and a premiere of a new piece by Mark Hayes entitled Kindness with DCINY at Lincoln Center. Jessica Sandidge*
as MicaelaPraised for her “luminous strands of silver vocalism” (Parterre Box) and her “voice of both power and beauty” (Operawire), soprano Jessica Sandidge made her role debut as Manon Lescaut this season with Opera Festival Chicago. Other credits include the role of Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, with Musica Viva in Hong Kong, Tosca (title role) in Los Angeles, and Marie (Daughter of the Regiment) with Sarasota Opera. Upcoming performances include, the title role in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah with Delaware Valley Opera, and a Tosca (TBA). Ms. Sandidge has sung several premieres in the last two seasons. With The American Opera Project, she sang the world premiere of Letters that You Will Not Get: Women’s Voices from The Great War, a chamber opera by Kirsten Volness. Sandidge also sang the title role in the 2024 US premiere of Corpus Evita by Carlos Franzetti. Joining the Metropolitan Opera for a third time in the 2018/19 season, Sandidge was cast in the cover role of Dawn in the premiere of Nico Muhly’s Marnie, based on Hitchcock’s film. In concert, Ms. Sandidge has had solos in classic pieces such as Fauré Requiem, and premiere pieces such as A Prayer for Mother Earth by Ivo Antogninni at Carnegie Hall, as well as David Geffen Hall, and Rose Hall of Lincoln Center. She lives and teaches in Los Angeles and is a member of The Opera Cowgirls.
Sophie Amelkin*
as MercedesSophie Amelkin is an NYC-based singer, actor & voice teacher. Sophie has performed Off-Broadway, in regional equity theaters, and in some of New York City’s favorite cabaret venues. She has toured internationally with a GRAMMY-winning rock band, playing nightly to thousands of fans at major arenas, festivals, and televised shows around the world. She made has made solo appearances at Carnegie Hall and has joined GRAMMY-nominated Skylark Vocal Ensemble for a number of concert cycles — recording with them as a soloist on their highly anticipated album La Vie en Rose. Sophie has made appearances as a soloist and chamber artist with a number of elite ensembles in New York and across the country including Musica Sacra, Voices of Ascension, the Clarion Choir, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Skål Chamber Ensemble, The Choir of the Washington National Cathedral, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, and the Choir of St. John the Divine. In 2021, Sophie was proud to be selected as a semi-finalist in the American Traditions Vocal Competition. Other recent stage appearances include the title role in the new musical My Princess Diana at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, a recital with acclaimed collaborative pianist Javier Arrebola featuring Ladino, Nordic, and Czech art song, performances of Libby Larsen’s monodrama The Magdalene as a Professional Fellow at SongFest in Los Angeles, soprano soloist in the world premiere of Paul John Rudoi’s Sermon on the Mount, Despina (Così fan tutte), St. Teresa of Avila (Four Saints in Three Acts), Biance (La Rondine), and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro).
Sarah Beckham-Turner*
as FrasquitaSarah Beckham-Turner is a multi-talented artist with a passion for creating and participating in musical art. As a soprano, she has received critical acclaim for her soulful and affecting performances, earning praise from the New York Times, Opera News, Wall Street Journal, and The Observer. Recent engagements include in the world premiere of Letters That You Will Not Get, with the American Opera Projects in New York City, Alice in Verdi’s Falstaff with Raylynmor Opera, and Hänsel in Amarillo Opera’s production of Hänsel und Gretel. As a director, she works with young artists and has directed and produced productions such as The Magic Flute, Postcard from Morocco, and Our Town. In New York City she is the stage director for The Manhattan Opera Studio, where she recently directed Hänsel und Gretel.
In addition to her operatic career, Beckham-Turner is also a member of Opera Cowgirls, an all-female performing group that brings opera to new audiences. Opera Cowgirls have recently made appearances in Pensacola, The Berkshires, New York City, and Canyon, TX. Sarah also enjoys being a part of the soprano, horn, and piano trio, Triosarachops which was recently seen with Chamber Music Amarillo. Beckham-Turner is Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera at West Texas A&M University.

Evelyn Chen*
as Dancing Traveler, ChoreographerEvelyn Chen is a native New Yorker and graduate of the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance. She has performed works by Bill T Jones, Lar Lubovitch, Doug Varone, Merce Cunningham, RubberbandDanse, MADBOOTS and Loudhound Movement. Additional company work includes the Kevin Wynn Collection, LeeSaar, and the Pig Iron Theater Company. In 2021 she originated the role of Silas in Cinereal Productions’ Hotel Wonderland in Amsterdam, NL. She joined Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More, NYC in 2015, becoming a Rehearsal Director in 2018, Co-Resident Director in 2023 and Resident Director in 2024. She is currently the Co-Resident Director of recently opened immersive show, Life and Trust, directed by Teddy Kuperman (K-Pop) and choreographed by Rick and Jeff Kuperman (The Outsiders).

as Stage Manager/Dancing TravelersMeredith Beck is a Philadelphia-based theater artist who loves nothing more than working on developing projects! Her 2-person show “Merman and Martin- Together Off-Broadway” (exploring the behind the scenes friendship between Ethel Merman and Mary Martin), began as a selection for the Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival and since then has toured around the tri-state area and enjoyed full runs at Act 2 Playhouse, Montgomery Theater, and Mt Gretna Playhouse. She worked as a Producer on “The F Word” for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and is co-owner of The Live Entertainment Company. As an actor, she was most recently seen on stage as Ann-Margret in Elvis, A Musical Revolution at the Walnut Street Theater. Joe Brent*
as Music Director/Mandolin/Guitar/ViolinCalled, “one of the truly exceptional musicians of his generation,” a mandolinist about whom it has been said, “there has never been a mandolinist with greater technical skills,” and a composer whose music, “touches and communicates the essence of what it means to be an alive, feeling human being,” Joe Brent has forged a career as both instrumentalist and composer with unparalleled fluency across multiple genres.
As a classical musician, Mr. Brent has performed with all of the Big Five American orchestras and many more around the US and the world as well as chamber ensembles including ICE, Argento, Speculum Musicae, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, A Far Cry, among others. He taught at Mannes College and currently is on faculty at Bard.
He has performed with Regina Spektor, Woody Allen, Jewel, Stephane Grappelli, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, Kishi Bashi, and many more. In 2012 he founded the improvising chamber ensemble 9 Horses, “A restless shapeshifting amalgam of jazz, rock, pop, improvisation, melody, and variegated acoustic and electronic textures,” which has been in residence at colleges all over the United States.
Mr. Brent is the founder of Adhyâropa Records, an artist-owned collective on the forefront of progressive label services and distribution.
Michael Bellar*
as AccordianMichael Bellar is a NYC based musician, producer and composer who stands by his slow, southern roots. As a solo performer and as leader of his own improvisational based groups Michael has performed at a wide range of festivals and venues across the country including the Telluride Jazz Festival, NYC Winter Jazz Festival, Brooklyn Bowl, the Kennedy Center and the Blue Note NYC. He has opened for artists such as Robert Randolph, John Scofield, Cory Henry, Medeski Martin & Wood, Raul Midon, Oliver Wood (of the Wood Brothers) and Jon Cleary.
As a sideman Michael has toured/recorded/performed with an array of diverse artists such as; Amos Lee, Fred Wesley (James Brown), Railroad Earth, Oliver Wood (of the Wood Brothers), the Magpie Salute (Rich Robinson and Marc Ford of the Black Crowes), Art Garfunkel, Norbert Leo Butz, Biagio Antonacci, Brooklyn Qawwali Party, 9 Horses, Wheatus, Teddy Geiger (MD), Howie Day and Euro pop star Giorgia. Brett Parnell*
as Nylon Guitar/Electric GuitarMulti-instrumentalist Brett Parnell’s many musical interests have led him to don multiple hats. After receiving his masters’ degree from Yale School of Music he worked as a freelance musician while touring with his bands Threefifty, Runaway Dorothy, and Darlin Darlin. Andrew Ryan*
as BassAndrew Ryan wants you to love the bass. As a performer, composer, producer, and educator, his instrument rests at the core of his music. At ease singing folk songs, constructing soundscapes, or playing baroque melodies, Andrew lives comfortably in a musical curiosity spanning folk to formal and ancient to avant-garde.
Andrew’s eclecticism began at a young age, studying in western classical and jazz traditions while moonlighting in pop & folk outfits. During his studies at Ithaca College and Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Andrew sought out personal tutelage of bass virtuoso Francois Rabbath to help him fuse his disparate interests with uncompromising technique and artistry.
A coveted side-player & collaborator, Andrew has forged a career adapting to almost any sonic environment. He appears regularly alongside Kaia Kater, Jayme Stone, & Moira Smiley; and is a member of the improvising chamber-group 9 Horses. In addition to playing bass he regularly composes and produces music for film, and records, mixes, and masters music at his studio in Brooklyn.
Uila Marx
as Traveling Dancer, ChoreographerUila Marx (they/she) is a movement artist and educator from O’ahu, Hawai’i, based in occupied Lenapehoking / Brooklyn. Uila’s work centers collective care, queer childhood joy, and an urgency toward communal survival. Uila holds BAs in dance and psychology from Barnard College, Columbia University and is a 2024 Hula ‘Ōlapa graduate with Ka Pā Hula O Ka Lei Lehua. Currently, Uila is in artful community with DELIRIOUS Dances (Edisa Weeks), Troy Ogilvie, The Why Collective, Lucia Gagliardone/SlowDance, and Rae Su. Uila also hosts Emergent Improvisation, brainchild of Troy Ogilvie, at Gibney and Peridance and she is a Community Actionist in Gibney’s Hands Are for Holding program, which uses dance to initiate conversations about healthy relationships, consent, and boundaries with young people across NYC.
Troy Ogilvie*
as ChoreographerTroy practices mutual aid, dance improvisation, and participatory democracy in Lenapehoking, currently known as Brooklyn. This work involves free fridges, bulk food distribution, and free stores among other activities that prioritize solidarity, not charity. Troy’s community organizing and choreographic work spring from her dance lineage of mentors Sidra Bell, Margie Gillis, Gallim Dance, Punchdrunk, Susan Misner, and Alexandra Wells and the written work of Dean Spade and adrienne maree brown. Recent choreographic work includes ‘luzAzul’ an immersive opera for 0-2 year olds with director Malena Dayen; ‘Critical Dependency’ a film installation about free fridges, food insecurity, and compost in collaboration with the Center for Innovation in the Arts at Juilliard; and ‘The Ninth Hour’ the Beowulf rock-opera which premiered at the Met Cloisters. She’s also a team member on The Dance Union Podcast, a host for Emergent Improvisation with Omar Zubair, a volunteer with the Parole Prep Project, a graduate from The Juilliard School, and a parent of two kiddos.
